The honeybee waggle dance is one of the most remarkable communication systems in the animal kingdom. When a forager bee discovers a rich source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs a figure-eight dance on the honeycomb. The angle of the dance relative to the vertical indicates the direction of the food source relative to the sun, while the duration of the waggle phase communicates the distance. Other bees observe the dance closely and then fly directly to the indicated location.
