Spreading beats broken. Broken beats annoying. Look at who is in front of you, then tap the box they belong in.

What does a it support technician do?

You are the person everyone rings when the thing they depend on stops working — and the person who has to spot which of those calls is actually an emergency.

Also called: service desk analyst, first-line support, IT technician.

A day looks like

  1. 1You read overnight: what alerted, what failed, what backed up and what quietly did not.
  2. 2The queue opens and eleven things arrive at once, of which one matters far more than the other ten.
  3. 3You fix a printer, reset a password, and talk somebody through something they have been quietly struggling with for a month.
  4. 4You write down what you did. The next person on the desk only knows what you wrote.

Hardest part

Saying no to someone senior. The most expensive mistakes in this job are done politely, quickly and for somebody important who asked nicely.

Best part

You are the only person in the building who can see how it all actually fits together — and after about a year, you are the one people come to before they break something.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to be good at coding to work in IT?
No. Most IT jobs are not programming. The service desk, networks, security and systems work all need someone who reads the error message carefully, asks good questions and writes down what they did. Coding is one branch of a large tree.
Why would you unplug a computer before looking at the problem?
Because some problems get worse while you examine them. Ransomware encrypts whatever it can still reach, so taking the machine off the network first is the fix — the investigation happens afterwards, on a machine that can no longer do any harm.
How do you get a first job in IT?
Usually on a service desk or an apprenticeship, with no degree. It is one of the few well-paid fields where the normal route in is a first job rather than a qualification, and what gets you promoted is being the person who writes things down.
