What 2nd Grade covers

The skills their teacher will assume, in plain language.

  • Adding and subtracting two- and three-digit numbers with regrouping
  • Reading fluently with expression rather than word by word
  • Writing a paragraph with a topic sentence and details
  • Understanding place value to 1,000
  • Telling time to five minutes and counting money
  • Beginning multiplication as repeated addition

2nd Grade supply list

Check the school's own list too โ€” this covers what they usually leave out.

  • Pencils, erasers, and a sharpener
  • Coloured pencils and a highlighter
  • Scissors and glue
  • Wide-ruled notebooks (one per subject if requested)
  • Ruler with centimetres and inches
  • Take-home folder and library bag
  • Headphones for classroom devices

Three things that matter at this age

Reread the same page three times

Repeated reading is the fastest known fluency intervention. Same page, three times, three days a week.

Separate spelling from ideas

Let them write freely first, then fix spelling. Correcting mid-sentence kills the sentence.

Give them real coins

Money maths sticks when it's physical. A jar of change beats ten worksheets.
