    Close reading and annotation that works

    Can do: Annotates a text with questions and observations that can actually be used in an essay later.

    Why it matters

    High-school English is built on close reading. Annotation that's just highlighting produces nothing usable when the essay is due.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Highlights half the page in yellow with no notes, so rereading is required from scratch anyway.

    Look at their annotated text. "Could you write a paragraph from these notes without rereading?"

    Solid looks like: Notes are questions and observations, not just highlighting.

    Reading dense non-fiction without drowning

    Can do: Reads a difficult article or textbook section strategically and extracts the argument.

    Why it matters

    Textbook density jumps this year. Reading front to back at one speed is the slowest possible method and the default one.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Reads every word at the same pace, finishes exhausted, and remembers the last paragraph only.

    Reading volume and academic vocabulary

    Can do: Reads widely outside assigned texts and deliberately collects academic vocabulary.

    Why it matters

    Reading volume drops off a cliff at fourteen, exactly when vocabulary demands rise. It's the quietest cause of a stalled English grade.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Only reads what's assigned, and vocabulary growth stops entirely.

    Solid looks like: Something real — a book, long articles, quality journalism.

    The high-school literary essay

    Can do: Writes an essay with an arguable thesis, integrated quotations and analysis that answers the question.

    Why it matters

    It's the assessed form of Grade 9 English. Most lost marks come from answering a slightly different question than the one set.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Writes everything they know about the book instead of answering the specific question asked.

    Solid looks like: The thesis contains the question's terms and takes a position.

    The research paper and citation format

    Can do: Produces a multi-page researched argument with a consistent citation style and a bibliography.

    Why it matters

    Format errors cost marks that have nothing to do with quality of thought, and they're entirely preventable.

    Sources assembled at the end from memory, citation format invented, bibliography incomplete.

    Solid looks like: Answered instantly from their notes.

    Writing well under time pressure

    Can do: Plans in three minutes, writes for thirty, and leaves time to check.

    Why it matters

    Timed writing is a different skill from coursework, and it's the one exams measure. It responds well to rehearsal.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Starts writing immediately, runs out of time mid-argument, and never checks anything.

    Set a 35-minute timed essay and watch what happens in the first five minutes.

    Solid looks like: Three to five minutes of planning before any prose.

    Equation and inequality fluency

    Can do: Solves any linear equation or inequality, including fractions and variables on both sides, reliably and quickly.

    Why it matters

    Algebra I assumes this is automatic. Every later topic — quadratics, systems, functions — is bottlenecked by it.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Can solve them but slowly and with frequent sign or distribution errors, which then corrupt every multi-step problem.

    Solid looks like: Both correct in a couple of minutes, with the inequality flipped.

    Functions, notation, domain and range

    Can do: Uses function notation confidently and states domain and range from a graph or a context.

    Why it matters

    Function language is the vocabulary of every remaining maths course. Domain restrictions are where context and algebra meet.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Gives domain and range as memorised intervals without reference to what the variable represents.

    "f(x) = √(x − 3). Domain? If f models the height of a ball, what's the sensible domain?"

    Solid looks like: x ≥ 3 algebraically, and a context-restricted answer for the ball.

    Modelling with linear functions

    Can do: Builds a linear model from a real situation and interprets both parameters and the prediction.

    Why it matters

    It's the point where algebra becomes useful, and interpretation is exactly what exams reward and students skip.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Produces the equation and stops, never interpreting the numbers or sanity-checking the prediction.

    "A tank has 200 L, draining 5 L/min. Write the model. When is it empty? Is 60 minutes sensible?"

    Solid looks like: y = 200 − 5x, 40 minutes, and 60 rejected as impossible.

    Systems of equations in real problems

    Can do: Sets up and solves systems from word problems, choosing an efficient method.

    Why it matters

    Setting up the system is the actual skill; solving it is mechanical. Word-to-equation translation is where marks are lost.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Can solve a given system but cannot construct one from a described situation.

    "Tickets: adults $12, children $8. 200 tickets sold, $2,000 taken. How many of each?"

    Solid looks like: The system set up correctly, then solved: 100 each.

    Polynomials and factoring

    Can do: Multiplies and factors polynomials, including differences of squares and trinomials.

    Why it matters

    Factoring is the technique the rest of algebra rests on — solving quadratics, simplifying rationals, everything after.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Factors by trial and error with no systematic approach, and misses a common factor first.

    Solid looks like: All three, with the common factor taken out first in the last one.

    Quadratic equations and their graphs

    Can do: Solves quadratics by factoring, completing the square and the formula, and connects roots to the graph.

    Why it matters

    The link between the algebraic solution and the x-intercepts is the conceptual heart of it — without it, quadratics are three unrelated procedures.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Applies the formula without noticing it factors easily, and doesn't see the roots on the graph.

    "Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0 and sketch it. Where do your solutions appear on the sketch?"

    Solid looks like: x = 2 and 3, and both marked as x-intercepts.

    Exponential growth versus linear growth

    Can do: Distinguishes constant difference from constant ratio, and models exponential situations.

    Why it matters

    Human intuition about exponential growth is terrible, and it matters for interest, populations, epidemics and compound anything.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Treats fast growth as steep linear growth, and dramatically underestimates the long run.

    "$100 at 10% a year, or $10 added per year — which is bigger after 30 years?"

    Solid looks like: The exponential, by a lot, with the reason being multiplication rather than addition.

    Data, regression and interpreting a model

    Can do: Fits a line to real data, interprets the parameters, and knows the limits of the fit.

    Why it matters

    It's the maths behind every claim from a study, and the limits are more important than the calculation.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Reports a correlation coefficient with no sense of what it means or what the model can't do.

    Solid looks like: Strong positive association, and explicitly not causation, nor validity outside the data range.

    Cells, macromolecules and energy

    Can do: Explains how cells get and use energy, and links structure to function in organelles.

    Why it matters

    Photosynthesis and respiration are the two reactions all biology depends on, and they're usually memorised as unconnected equations.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Recites both equations without noticing they're near-inverses, and treats them as belonging to different organisms.

    Solid looks like: Roughly inverse processes, and yes — plants respire constantly.

    DNA, protein synthesis and inheritance

    Can do: Explains how DNA codes for proteins and predicts inheritance with a Punnett square.

    Why it matters

    It's the mechanism underneath everything else in biology, and the gene-to-trait chain is what most students never quite assemble.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Knows DNA carries information but has no chain from gene to protein to trait.

    Evolution, evidence and ecosystems

    Can do: Marshals multiple lines of evidence for evolution and explains energy flow through an ecosystem.

    Why it matters

    Evolution is the framework that makes biology coherent, and handling the evidence is a lesson in how science establishes anything.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Can define natural selection but cannot list the independent evidence that supports it.

    Building a historical argument from documents

    Can do: Reads a set of primary documents, weighs them, and writes a thesis-driven argument.

    Why it matters

    It's the assessed skill in high-school history and the transferable one: judging evidence written by people with interests.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Summarises each document in turn instead of using them as evidence for a claim.

    Can do: Explains how economic and political systems connect countries, and evaluates who benefits.

    Why it matters

    It's the framework for most news they'll encounter, and it directly connects geography, economics and politics.

    Discusses global issues with no mechanism — just a sense that things are connected somehow.

    Understanding what actually counts now

    Can do: Knows how grades are calculated, tracks their own, and acts before the end of a term rather than after.

    Why it matters

    Grade 9 marks follow them. Students who understand the arithmetic act early; students who don't are surprised in June.

    No idea of current grades until the report arrives, and by then the recoverable moment has passed.

    Managing a real workload

    Can do: Runs one calendar covering school, activities and commitments, and protects sleep within it.

    Why it matters

    The first year where school plus extracurriculars can genuinely exceed the hours available. The trade-offs have to be made deliberately.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Says yes to everything, then loses sleep as the shock absorber for every scheduling failure.

    Solid looks like: Specific blocks visible in a calendar, and sleep not the flexible item.

When to ask for help instead of practising harder

Home practice fixes most gaps. These are the ones where a conversation with the teacher — or an assessment — is worth more than another month of trying. Raising them early is not an overreaction; waiting a year rarely helps.

  • Algebra I is failing at the halfway point — get help immediately; it is a prerequisite for everything ahead.
  • Essays are consistently off-question despite feedback.
  • Missing assignments accumulating for organisational reasons.
  • Sleep regularly under seven hours, treated as normal.
  • Marked withdrawal, anxiety, or a sudden drop in effort — the first year of high school is a common point for this, and early support works.

By the end of 9th Grade
