The one idea

Prices aren't decided by the seller — they're decided by how many people want it and how much of it exists.

Nine and ten year olds are ready for a real bank account with their name on it. Supply and demand clicks this year if you show it with something they already collect.

💼 Earn

Working for someone vs working for yourself

With a job, you get paid the same whether it's a busy day or a quiet one — safe, but capped. With your own thing, a bad week pays nothing and a great week pays a lot. Neither one is better; they're different trades.

Do this

Draw two columns and list what's good and bad about each. Notice that the good things are opposites.

Say this

"Would you rather have $10 guaranteed, or a coin flip between $0 and $30? There's no right answer — but know which one you picked."

🏦 Save

Your own bank account

A bank keeps your money safer than a jar, pays you a little interest, and shows you a number that goes up. The trade is that you can't see it or touch it, which makes spending it feel less real.

Do this

Open a real children's savings account, in their name, and let them make the first deposit at the counter.

Say this

"This account has your name on it. Nobody takes money out of it but you."

🛒 Spend

Price per unit

The big box isn't always cheaper. Divide the price by how much you're actually getting, and compare those numbers instead. Shops rely on you not doing this.

Do this

In one supermarket aisle, work out the price per 100g for three sizes of the same product. Find which is really cheapest.

Say this

"Don't compare the prices — compare price per 100g. Which one is actually cheaper?"

💝 Give

Where the money actually goes

Charities aren't all the same. Some send most of your donation to the people who need it; some spend a lot on running themselves. Checking before you give makes your money do more.

Do this

Look up two charities doing similar work and find how much of each dollar reaches the cause.

Say this

"Both do good work. But which one turns more of your dollar into actual help?"

📈 Grow

Supply and demand

When lots of people want something and there isn't much of it, the price goes up. When there's loads of it and nobody's interested, the price falls. That's it — that's the whole rule behind most prices you see.

Do this

Look at something they collect. Find the rarest one and the most common one, and compare what people pay.

Say this

"Why is that one worth more? Is it better — or is it just rarer?"

🧠 Mindset

Getting told no

Every person who sells anything hears no far more often than yes. The ones who succeed aren't the ones who avoid no — they're the ones who ask enough times that the yeses add up.

Do this

Set a target of collecting ten noes this week. Chasing noes flips the fear on its head.

Say this

"How many noes did you get today? Good — that means you actually asked."

Supply
How much of something exists to buy.
Like: Only 50 of that card were ever printed.
Demand
How many people want it.
Like: Everyone at school wants that card.
Deposit
Money you put into a bank account.
Like: Paying in $20 of birthday money.
Withdraw
Money you take out of a bank account.
Like: Taking $5 out for the school trip.
Unit price
What it costs per gram, per litre, or per one.
Like: $4 for 500g is 80¢ per 100g.
Revenue
All the money that came in, before costs.
Like: 40 cups at $1 is $40 revenue.

What it costs to start

$10–20 in materials

What to charge

Cost per unit, then multiply by three. One-third materials, one-third your time, one-third profit.

  1. 1Make ten of something people actually buy — friendship bracelets, keyrings, baked goods.
  2. 2Add up total materials and divide by ten. That's your cost per unit.
  3. 3Set the price at roughly three times that, and write down the reasoning.
  4. 4Sell five at that price. Watch how quickly they go.
  5. 5If they sold out fast, raise the price for the next batch — that's demand talking.

The business lesson underneath

Selling out instantly means you priced too low. Fast sell-out is information, not just success.

Three habits that matter at this age

The money lessons only stick if these are running underneath them.

Let them run the account

Their own deposits, their own balance checks, their own withdrawal decisions. Supervised, but not done for them.

Reframe rejection as data

Count noes out loud. A child who tracks rejections stops fearing them, and that single reframe outlasts every money lesson here.

Always divide before comparing

Unit price, per-serving cost, cost per use. Comparing totals is how shops win; comparing units is how you do.

By the end of 4th Grade
