When adding fractions with different denominators, you first need to find a common denominator. A denominator is the bottom number of a fraction, showing how many equal parts the whole is divided into. For example, to add 1/4 and 1/2, you can use 4 as the common denominator. Convert 1/2 to an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 4, which is 2/4. Now, you can add 1/4 and 2/4 together. This gives you 3/4. So, 1/4 + 1/2 equals 3/4 when you find a common denominator and add the numerators.
