Chemical changes and physical changes are two different ways that matter can change. A physical change is when the appearance of a substance changes, but its chemical identity stays the same. For example, when ice melts into water, it changes shape and state, but it is still H2O. On the other hand, a chemical change happens when a substance transforms into something new with different properties. An example of a chemical change is when iron rusts; it reacts with oxygen in the air to form rust, which is not the same as iron. Understanding these changes helps us know how materials interact in the world around us.
