Earth's rotation is the spinning of our planet on its axis, which is an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. It takes about 24 hours for Earth to complete one full rotation, which is why we have day and night. When one side of the Earth faces the Sun, it experiences daytime, while the opposite side is in darkness, or nighttime. For example, when it's daytime in New York City, it's nighttime in places like Tokyo, Japan. This rotation also causes the Sun to appear to rise in the east and set in the west. Understanding Earth's rotation helps us learn about time zones and how we experience different times of day around the globe.
