Absolute value measures the distance of a number from zero on the number line, regardless of direction. It is always a non-negative value. For example, the absolute value of -5 is written as |-5|, and it equals 5 because -5 is 5 units away from zero. Similarly, the absolute value of 5 is |5|, which is also 5. This means both -5 and 5 have the same absolute value! You can think of absolute value as the 'size' of a number without worrying about whether it's positive or negative. In mathematical terms, if 'x' is any number, its absolute value is expressed as |x|. So, whether you're dealing with temperatures, elevations, or any other measurement that can go below zero, absolute value helps to represent how far from zero it is.
