A rate is a special kind of ratio that compares two different quantities. It tells you how much of one thing there is for a certain amount of another. For example, if you drive 60 miles in 1 hour, your rate of speed is 60 miles per hour (mph). This means that for every hour you drive, you cover 60 miles. Rates can be found in many everyday situations, like when you buy items on sale. If a shirt costs $20 and is 25% off, the rate of the discount is $5 off for every $20 spent. Understanding rates helps you make decisions, like figuring out the best deal when shopping or how long it will take to travel a certain distance. Rates allow you to compare different situations easily and can be very useful in daily life!
