Volcanoes are openings in the Earth's surface where molten rock, ash, and gases escape from the interior. They form when magma from deep within the Earth rises to the surface. When pressure builds up, it can cause an eruption, sending lava and ash into the air. One famous example is Mount St. Helens in Washington State, which erupted dramatically in 1980. This eruption changed the landscape and had a significant impact on the local environment. Volcanoes can be classified into different types, such as shield, composite, and cinder cone, based on their shape and eruption style. While they can be destructive, volcanic eruptions also create new land and can lead to fertile soil, benefiting agriculture in the long run.
