Proportional relationships occur when two quantities change at the same rate. This means that if one quantity increases or decreases, the other does so in a way that keeps the same ratio between them. For example, if you buy 3 apples for $6, you can find the cost of any number of apples using this proportion. If you wanted to buy 5 apples, you could set up a ratio: 3 apples to $6 is the same as 5 apples to x dollars. To find x, you can use cross-multiplication: 3x = 30, which gives x = $10. This shows that the cost of apples is directly proportional to the number of apples you buy. Recognizing proportional relationships helps you solve problems related to rates, prices, and measurements in everyday life.
