The Reformation was a major movement in the 16th century that aimed to change the Catholic Church. It began when a German monk named Martin Luther criticized the Church's practices, especially the sale of indulgences, which allowed people to pay for forgiveness of sins. Luther believed that faith alone, not good deeds, was the way to salvation. He wrote the 95 Theses, a list of complaints against the Church, and nailed it to a church door in 1517. This act sparked a wave of religious change across Europe. As a result, new branches of Christianity, like Protestantism, were formed. The Reformation led to a greater emphasis on the Bible and individual faith, changing how people viewed religion and authority in their lives.
