Cell biology is the study of cells, which are the basic building blocks of all living things. Every organism, from tiny bacteria to large trees and animals, is made up of cells. Cells have different parts, called organelles, that perform specific functions. For example, the nucleus is like the control center of the cell, where it stores DNA and regulates activities. Another important organelle is the mitochondria, often called the powerhouse of the cell, because it produces energy for the cell to use. Cells can be classified into two main types: prokaryotic cells, which do not have a nucleus and are usually simpler, like bacteria, and eukaryotic cells, which have a nucleus and are more complex, like human cells. Understanding how cells work helps scientists learn about health, disease, and the environment.
