Sound waves are vibrations that travel through a medium, such as air, water, or solid materials. When an object vibrates, it moves the particles in the surrounding medium, creating areas of high and low pressure. These pressure changes move away from the source, forming sound waves. For example, when a guitar string is plucked, it vibrates and sends sound waves through the air. Our ears detect these waves, allowing us to hear music. The speed of sound varies depending on the medium; it travels faster in water than in air because the particles are closer together. Understanding sound waves helps us in various fields, from music and communication to medicine, where ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of the body.
