Atomic structure refers to the arrangement and organization of particles within an atom. Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter and consist of three main parts: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus, the center of the atom, while electrons orbit around the nucleus in energy levels. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons are neutral, and electrons have a negative charge. The number of protons in an atom determines its element; for example, hydrogen has one proton, while oxygen has eight. This structure explains how atoms bond with each other to form molecules. For instance, when two hydrogen atoms bond with one oxygen atom, they create water (H2O), an essential substance for life. Understanding atomic structure helps us grasp how different materials and chemical reactions occur in the world around us.
