Newton's First Law of Motion states that an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant speed and in a straight line unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. This means that things donโ€™t just start moving or stop moving on their own. For example, if you slide a book across a table, it eventually comes to a stop due to friction, which is the unbalanced force acting on it. If there were no friction, the book would keep sliding forever! This law shows us that motion requires a force to change it. Understanding this law helps explain why seat belts are important; in a car crash, your body wants to keep moving forward even if the car stops suddenly. The seat belt provides the necessary force to keep you safe.
