Lesson 29 of 84 ยท Weathering and Erosion

Experimentโญ 30 XP๐ŸŒ‹ Rock Realm

Wind and Air Pressure

๐ŸงชLab Brief #29

Weathering and Erosion.

๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).

โšก The twist

Today's mountain was yesterday's ocean floor.

๐Ÿคฏ

Mind = Blown

๐ŸŒ‹ There are 1,500 active volcanoes on Earth right now.

๐Ÿ”ฎ

Make a hypothesis first

Guess: where will the water go first?

What You'll Learn

Caves form when slightly acidic water dissolves limestone over thousands of years. Stalactites hang from the ceiling and stalagmites grow from the floor as minerals are deposited.

Key Words

  • landform
  • soil
  • rock cycle

Materials Needed

  • magnifying glass
  • newspaper
  • spray bottle
  • cups

Safety First

  • Do not look directly at the sun or bright lights.
  • Clean up spills immediately to prevent slipping.
  • Use materials only as directed in the experiment.

Steps

Step 1 โ€” Read

Review the background information on Weathering and Erosion before starting.

Step 2 โ€” Do

Set up a weather station: use a thermometer, rain gauge (a jar with a ruler), and wind sock (a plastic bag on a stick). Record data for one week.

Step 3 โ€” Observe

Observe what happens and describe it in detail.

Step 4 โ€” Record

Record your observations in your science journal with measurements and descriptions.

Question 1

1 of 3

What is sediment?

๐ŸŒ

Where you see this in real life

Today's weather, tomorrow's beach, next century's coastline โ€” all this.

๐Ÿ†

Stretch Challenge

Try this in real life this week.

Look at the sky for 5 minutes and try to predict tomorrow's weather.
