Counting every organism in a field is impossible, so ecologists count within randomly placed quadrats and scale up by area. Random placement matters: putting quadrats where the plants look best guarantees an overestimate.

- Wash hands after handling soil and plants, and check the area for broken glass first.
Steps

Place ten quadrats at random coordinates on a lawn, count one species in each, and scale to the whole area. Then deliberately place ten more where that species looks densest and compare the two estimates.
Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.
