Lesson 3 of 8 · Lab Skills
Experiment⭐ 30 XPSystematic and Random Errors
Lab Skills.
🎯 Your mission
Predict it first. Then prove yourself right (or wrong).
⚡ The twist
Nature loves to surprise the careful watcher.
Mind = Blown
🔬 The more you look, the more nature shows you.
Make a hypothesis first
Before you start: write down what you think will happen, and why.
What You'll Learn
A systematic error shifts every reading the same way — a zero offset or a mis-calibrated scale — and repeating does not help; only correcting the instrument does. Random error scatters readings both ways, and taking a mean of repeats reduces it.
Key Words

Materials Needed
- newton meter
- known masses
- notebook
Safety First
- Support hanging masses so they cannot drop onto feet.
Steps
Read the explanation above and note the two key terms before you start.
Deliberately introduce a zero error on a newton meter and take five readings, then correct the zero and repeat. Compare the two means against a known weight and classify the difference in each set.
Record what actually happened, including anything that did not match what you expected.
Write a conclusion that answers the question this lesson opened with, and state your uncertainty.
