To answer Glaucon, Plato in Republic Book 4 divides the human soul into three parts. Reason loves truth and calculates what is best. Spirit (thumos) is the source of anger, pride and the desire for honor. Appetite seeks food, drink, comfort and wealth. Plato argues for this division from inner conflict: a thirsty person may refuse a drink they know is harmful, showing that one part of the soul is resisting another.

Justice in the individual, he claims, is a harmony in which reason rules, spirit supports it and appetite obeys, just as each class in a just city does its own work. A just person is therefore healthy and at peace, while an unjust person is torn by conflict, which answers Glaucon by showing justice benefits its possessor. The model shaped later ideas of the mind, and readers often compare it with modern theories of reason and emotion.
