The Missouri Compromise was an important agreement made in 1820 to address the balance of power between slave and free states. It allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state, while Maine was admitted as a free state to maintain the balance. Additionally, the compromise established a line across the Louisiana Territory, north of which slavery would be prohibited. This temporary solution aimed to ease tensions between the North and South but ultimately highlighted the ongoing conflicts over slavery.
