The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848 and marked the end of the Mexican-American War. This treaty had significant consequences, as it resulted in Mexico ceding about half of its territory to the United States, including present-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. The treaty also established the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico. While the treaty expanded U.S. territory, it also intensified the debate over slavery in these new regions, contributing to the growing tensions that would lead to the Civil War.
