The Electoral College is a unique system used to elect the President of the United States. Instead of citizens directly voting for their preferred candidate, they vote for electors pledged to that candidate. Each state has a certain number of electoral votes based on its population and the number of Senators and Representatives it has in Congress. When citizens cast their votes on Election Day, these electors then cast their votes for President. To win, a candidate must receive a majority of the electoral votes, which is currently set at 270 out of 538.
