Beginning in the mid-20th century, activists like Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, and Desmond Tutu fought against the oppressive laws that discriminated against non-white citizens. The movement gained international support, with protests, boycotts, and sanctions aimed at pressuring the South African government to change its policies. By the early 1990s, apartheid was dismantled, leading to the first democratic elections in 1994, where Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president.
