The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed in 1848, officially ended the Mexican-American War and established a new boundary between the United States and Mexico. Under the treaty's terms, Mexico ceded over 500,000 square miles of territory, which included present-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. In exchange, the U.S. agreed to pay Mexico $15 million and assume claims by American citizens against the Mexican government.
