Then & Now
๐ฐ๏ธ History isn't really 'history' โ it shapes today, every day.
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed in 1848, formally ended the Mexican-American War and established a new boundary between the United States and Mexico. Under the terms of the treaty, Mexico ceded approximately 500,000 square miles of territory to the United States, which included present-day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico. This acquisition significantly expanded U.S. territory and was integral to the fulfillment of Manifest Destiny. However, the treaty also fueled debates over slavery in the newly acquired territories, intensifying sectional tensions that would contribute to the Civil War.
