World War II, which erupted in 1939 and lasted until 1945, forced the United States to confront its isolationist policies and engage in global conflict. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the U.S. formally entered the war, joining the Allies against the Axis powers. American industry rapidly shifted to a wartime economy, producing vast quantities of military supplies, which not only supported the war effort but also stimulated economic recovery. Major battles, such as Midway and D-Day, highlighted the strategic importance of American forces, ultimately leading to the defeat of Axis powers and establishing the U.S. as a dominant global power in the post-war era.
