Fontenelle and Science for the Salon

For new ideas to change society, they had to escape university Latin and reach ordinary readers. Bernard de Fontenelle was one of the first to make science fashionable. His 1686 Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds staged evening talks in a garden between a philosopher and a clever marquise, explaining Copernican astronomy and Descartes's physics in witty French. The book suggested that women and non-specialists could understand science, and it speculated about life on other planets.

As permanent secretary of the Académie des sciences from 1697, Fontenelle wrote elegant tributes to deceased scientists that turned researchers into public heroes. Critics sometimes dismissed this popularization as shallow, and the marquise, though intelligent, is still taught by a male expert. Yet Fontenelle showed a model the philosophes would follow: spreading knowledge through charm and conversation could be as powerful as producing it.
