Classifying Humanity: The Enlightenment and Race

The Enlightenment drive to classify nature extended to human beings, with lasting and harmful consequences. In his Systema Naturae (1735), the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus organized living things into categories; by its 1758 edition he divided humans into varieties linked to continents and attached stereotyped character traits to each.

The French naturalist Buffon argued that human differences resulted from climate and environment and could change. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach's work, especially the 1795 edition of his treatise, described five human varieties and introduced the term 'Caucasian'; he stressed the unity of the human species and collected evidence of African achievements.

Other thinkers, including Hume in a 1753 footnote and Kant in essays on race, made claims of European superiority. Historians debate whether such ideas were central to the Enlightenment or a betrayal of its universalism. Modern genetics shows that 'races' are not distinct biological categories, but these classifications shaped racism, slavery's defenses and colonial policy for generations.
