    Breaking long words apart

    Can do: Splits an unfamiliar multisyllable word into chunks and reads it — un/for/tun/ate/ly.

    Why it matters

    Grade 3 texts are full of long words. A child with no chunking strategy either guesses or stops, and both destroy comprehension.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Guesses from the first syllable — reads "important" for "impossible" — or refuses to attempt any long word.

    Write: fantastic, remembering, unbelievable, temperature. "Read these."

    Solid looks like: Three of four, with visible chunking rather than guessing.

    Finding the main idea in non-fiction

    Can do: Reads an informational page and states the main idea in one sentence, with two supporting details.

    Why it matters

    From Grade 3 onward most school reading is non-fiction, and it is read to extract something. Detail-collecting without a main idea is reading that produces nothing.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Gives the most interesting fact instead of the main idea, or retells the whole page instead of summarising it.

    Read one page of a non-fiction book. "What was that page mainly about — in one sentence?"

    Solid looks like: A sentence covering the whole page, not the single most exciting fact in it.

    Prefixes, suffixes and word parts

    Can do: Knows what un-, re-, pre-, dis-, -less, -ful and -tion do to a word's meaning.

    Why it matters

    Word parts are the highest-leverage vocabulary tool there is: learning un- unlocks hundreds of words at once, permanently.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Treats every long word as brand new, with no transfer between related words.

    "What does 'unhelpful' mean? Break it into three parts and tell me what each part does."

    Solid looks like: un = not, help, ful = full of — and a correct overall meaning.

    Fluency at 100 words a minute

    Can do: Reads Grade 3 text at around 100 words a minute with phrasing and expression, silently as well as aloud.

    Why it matters

    Silent reading takes over this year. If oral fluency is weak, silent reading becomes staring at a page while thinking about something else.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Fine aloud but retains nothing when reading silently — the classic sign that silent reading has become fake reading.

    One minute aloud from a Grade 3 book, counting correct words. Then a silent page followed by a summary.

    Solid looks like: Around 100 aloud, and a fair summary after silent reading.

    Writing more than one paragraph

    Can do: Plans and writes an introduction, two or three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

    Why it matters

    The structural jump from one paragraph to several is the biggest writing step of primary school, and it's mostly a planning problem rather than a writing one.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    One giant block of text with no breaks, or three paragraphs that all say the same thing.

    "Write about your favourite place — an opening, two middle paragraphs and an ending."

    Solid looks like: Four visible paragraphs, each with its own point.

    Narrative craft — dialogue, detail and a real ending

    Can do: Writes a story with a problem, dialogue punctuated properly, sensory detail, and an ending that isn't "I woke up".

    Why it matters

    Story writing is where children learn that specific beats general — the single most transferable lesson in all writing.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Endless "and then" sequences, no dialogue, and an ending that cancels the whole story.

    "Write a short story where someone loses something. Put one line of speech in it."

    Solid looks like: A problem, a resolution, and speech marks in roughly the right places.

  • ✏️ Writing

    Revising — changing the writing, not just the spelling

    Can do: Rereads their draft and improves word choice, sentence variety and clarity, not only mechanics.

    Why it matters

    Editing fixes errors; revising makes it better. Children who only ever edit believe writing is one draft plus tidying.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    "Revising" means recopying it neatly, and every sentence still starts with "Then".

    ⏱️ Two-minute check

    Give them their own draft. "Make three changes that make it better — not spelling."

    Solid looks like: Three genuine improvements: a stronger word, a joined sentence, a cut.

    Times tables to 12 — automatic, not calculated

    Can do: Answers any fact to 12 × 12 in under three seconds, in any order.

    Why it matters

    Fluent tables are the price of admission to fractions, division, area and everything in Grade 4 and 5. Nothing else this year has a bigger return.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Can chant a table from the start but can't answer 7 × 6 cold; falls back to counting up in sixes.

    Ask ten random facts out of order, including 7×8, 6×9, 4×7, 12×6.

    Solid looks like: Eight or more within about three seconds each.

    Division and fact families

    Can do: Knows 42 ÷ 6 because they know 6 × 7, and understands division as sharing and as grouping.

    Why it matters

    Division taught as a separate skill doubles the memorisation load. Taught as multiplication backwards, it's free.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Treats every division as a brand-new problem to work out by repeated subtraction.

    "56 ÷ 8?" then "How did you know?" Then: "Write the four facts in that family."

    Solid looks like: Seven, justified by 8 × 7, and all four related facts.

    Multi-step problems, and estimating first

    Can do: Solves two- and three-step problems and estimates the answer before calculating.

    Why it matters

    Estimation is the error-catcher. A child who estimates first notices when a slip has produced an answer ten times too big.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Writes an answer with no sense of whether it's plausible, and never notices a decimal-point-sized error.

    "Four boxes of 24 pens, 30 are used. Roughly how many left? Now work it out exactly."

    Solid looks like: An estimate around 70 before calculating, then 66 exactly.

  • 🔢 Math

    Fractions are numbers, not pictures

    Can do: Places 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 and 2/3 on a number line and knows a fraction is one number, not two.

    Why it matters

    The pizza model runs out fast. Children who only ever see fractions as parts of a shape cannot handle fractions greater than one, or fractions on a ruler.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Reads 3/4 as "three and four"; thinks 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because eight is bigger than four.

    ⏱️ Two-minute check

    Draw a line from 0 to 1. "Put 1/2 on it. Now 3/4. Which is bigger, 1/4 or 1/8?"

    Solid looks like: Both placed roughly right, and 1/4 chosen with a reason about the size of the pieces.

    Equivalent fractions

    Can do: Recognises that 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8, and can generate an equivalent fraction.

    Why it matters

    Equivalence is what makes adding fractions possible in Grade 4 and 5. Without it, every fraction operation is arbitrary.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Sees 2/4 and 1/2 as different amounts, and applies the multiply-top-and-bottom rule with no idea why it's allowed.

    "Is 2/4 the same as 1/2? Prove it. Now give me a fraction equal to 1/3."

    Solid looks like: A proof by picture or strip, and 2/6 or 3/9.

    Area and perimeter

    Can do: Finds the area of a rectangle by multiplying, and the perimeter by adding — and knows which is which.

    Why it matters

    Area is where multiplication becomes geometric, and the two ideas are permanently confused unless they're built physically.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Swaps the two, adds when they should multiply, and forgets the units are different — cm versus cm².

    Draw a 4 by 6 rectangle. "What's the area? What's the perimeter?"

    Solid looks like: 24 square units and 20 units, with the right units named.

    Elapsed time, measurement and scaled graphs

    Can do: Works out how long something took, measures in the right unit, and reads a graph where one square equals five.

    Why it matters

    Elapsed time is the most-used and least-taught bit of school maths, and scaled graphs are where most data misreadings begin.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Subtracts times as if they were decimals — 3:15 to 4:05 becoming "90 minutes" — and counts bars rather than reading the scale.

    "It started at 2:40 and finished at 3:25. How long?" Then read a graph scaled in fives.

    Solid looks like: 45 minutes, and a graph value read correctly off the scale.

    Forces, friction and magnets

    Can do: Predicts how a force changes motion, and explains friction and magnetic attraction.

    Why it matters

    It's the first topic where children can make a real prediction, test it fairly, and be measurably wrong — the actual scientific method in miniature.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Thinks a moving object needs a continuous push, and can't identify what would make a test unfair.

    "Why does a ball rolling on grass stop sooner than on wood? What would make that test unfair?"

    Solid looks like: Friction named, and one variable identified that must be kept the same.

    Traits, inheritance and adaptation

    Can do: Distinguishes traits inherited from parents from those caused by environment, and links traits to survival.

    Why it matters

    It's the foundation of evolution and genetics, and it's fully accessible with a family photo album.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Thinks all traits are inherited, including learned behaviour and injuries.

    "Is being tall inherited? What about speaking Spanish? What about a scar?"

    Solid looks like: Correct sorting with some reasoning about where each came from.

    Weather, climate and reading data

    Can do: Knows weather is now and climate is the pattern over years, and can read a weather table.

    Why it matters

    The weather/climate distinction is the single most misunderstood idea in public science conversation, and it's easy to fix at eight.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    "It's cold today so climate change isn't real" — the sample-of-one error, which is really a data-literacy problem.

    Solid looks like: Weather is today, climate is the long-run pattern for a place.

    Regions, landforms and why people settle where they do

    Can do: Describes how geography shapes where and how people live, using real examples.

    Why it matters

    It converts geography from a list of names into a set of causes, which is what makes it stick.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Can name landforms but sees no connection between geography and human decisions.

    "Why do so many big cities sit on rivers or coasts?"

    Solid looks like: Trade, transport, water, food — any real reason.

    Local history and primary sources

    Can do: Uses a photo, object or interview as evidence about the past, and knows the difference between a source and a story about the past.

    Why it matters

    History as evidence rather than as received narrative is the whole discipline. Eight is not too early to ask "how do we know that?"

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Treats everything in a book as simply true, with no notion that someone wrote it from something.

    Show an old family photo. "What can we know for certain from this? What are we guessing?"

    Solid looks like: A clear split between what's visible and what's inferred.

    Typing without looking

    Can do: Uses home row with the right fingers, around 15 words a minute by the end of the year.

    Why it matters

    From here on, a growing share of school work is typed. Hunt-and-peck typing costs a child real marks by Grade 6, entirely avoidably.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Two index fingers, eyes locked on the keyboard, and the thinking interrupted by the hunting.

    Doing homework without a hostage negotiation

    Can do: Starts homework at an agreed time, works for a set stretch, and asks for help specifically.

    Why it matters

    The habit matters more than the homework does. A child who can start without a fight has a skill worth more than the worksheet.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    An hour of avoidance before ten minutes of work, and "I don't get it" as a whole-task refusal.

    Watch one homework session without intervening. Time the start delay.

    Solid looks like: Starts within five minutes and works for fifteen without supervision.

When to ask for help instead of practising harder

Home practice fixes most gaps. These are the ones where a conversation with the teacher — or an assessment — is worth more than another month of trying. Raising them early is not an overreaction; waiting a year rarely helps.

  • Times tables are still not automatic by the end of Grade 3 despite regular practice.
  • Reading is below about 70 words a minute, or comprehension collapses whenever they read silently.
  • Cannot write more than a few sentences independently, or resists writing to the point of distress.
  • Fractions still make no sense at all by June even with objects to hand.
  • Homework consistently takes two or three times longer than the teacher intends — tell the teacher; that's data they need.

By the end of 3rd Grade
