    Figurative language and author's craft

    Can do: Identifies metaphor, simile, personification and idiom, and explains the effect rather than just naming it.

    Why it matters

    By Grade 5, texts assume figurative reading. A literal reader misunderstands sentences they can decode perfectly.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Names the device correctly and then says nothing about what it does, or reads a metaphor literally.

    Solid looks like: The meaning plus something about the image or the exaggeration it creates.

    Comparing two texts on the same topic

    Can do: Reads two accounts of the same subject and identifies where they agree, differ, and why.

    Why it matters

    It's the beginning of source analysis, which runs through history, science and everything they'll read online for the rest of their life.

    Summarises both separately with no comparison, or assumes disagreement means one is simply lying.

    Two articles on one event. "What did both say? What did only one say? Why might they differ?"

    Solid looks like: A real difference identified, with a plausible reason — purpose, audience, or missing information.

    Spotting the argument and the evidence behind it

    Can do: Identifies an author's claim, the evidence given, and whether the evidence actually supports it.

    Why it matters

    This is critical reading proper, and it is the direct defence against everything designed to persuade them online.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Confuses strong feeling with strong evidence, and is persuaded by confidence rather than support.

    Show an advert or an opinion column. "What do they want you to think? What's their proof? Is it good proof?"

    Solid looks like: Claim and evidence separated, and some judgement about the quality of the evidence.

    Academic vocabulary — the words school assumes

    Can do: Understands analyse, compare, evaluate, describe, justify, summarise — and does the right thing when told to.

    Why it matters

    Children lose marks for answering a question they weren't asked. These command words are rarely taught explicitly and are worth explicit teaching.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Describes when asked to explain, or lists when asked to compare — the content is fine, the task was misread.

    Solid looks like: Describe is what it's like, explain is why; compare covers similarities as well as differences.

    Can do: Writes a clear thesis statement and structures body paragraphs that each support it.

    Why it matters

    The thesis is what turns writing from a collection of things-I-know into an argument. Every essay from here to university needs one.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    The introduction announces the topic ("I am going to write about volcanoes") rather than making a claim about it.

    Solid looks like: A claim someone could disagree with, not a topic announcement.

    A research report with real sources

    Can do: Gathers information from several sources, organises it into sections, and lists where it came from.

    Why it matters

    It's the first piece of school work that requires managing information rather than just producing it — a skill that only gets more important.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Pastes together three paragraphs from three websites with no through-line and no sources listed.

    Look at their notes. "Which source did this fact come from? Say it in your own words."

    Solid looks like: Source identified, and the fact restated rather than recited.

    Grammar that changes meaning

    Can do: Uses commas, apostrophes and consistent tense correctly, and knows when a comma changes the sentence.

    Why it matters

    By Grade 5 mechanics carry marks, and more importantly ambiguity starts to cost meaning rather than just neatness.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Tense flips mid-paragraph, apostrophes appear on plurals, and comma splices join everything.

    Solid looks like: Both fixed, and they can say what changed.

    Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators

    Can do: Finds a common denominator and adds or subtracts, including with mixed numbers.

    Why it matters

    This is the gateway skill of Grade 5 maths. It fails when equivalent fractions aren't solid — the fix is almost always further back.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Adds numerators and denominators, or finds a common denominator and forgets to convert the numerators too.

    Solid looks like: 7/12 and 1 3/4, with the conversions visible.

    Multiplying and dividing with fractions

    Can do: Multiplies fractions, and divides a whole number by a unit fraction, understanding why the answer grows.

    Why it matters

    It overturns the deepest assumption in a child's maths: that multiplying makes bigger. Meeting that head-on prevents years of confusion.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    "Multiplying made it smaller — I must have done it wrong." And division by a fraction is pure guesswork.

    "1/2 × 1/3? And how many quarters are in 3?"

    Solid looks like: 1/6, and 12 — ideally explained rather than computed by a rule.

    Decimal operations and powers of ten

    Can do: Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides decimals, and knows what multiplying by 10 or 0.1 does.

    Why it matters

    Decimals are where place value is stress-tested. Errors here appear in money, measurement and science for years.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Lines decimals up by the last digit instead of the point, and thinks multiplying by 10 "adds a zero" — which fails immediately for 2.5.

    "3.4 + 12.75? 2.5 × 10? 4.2 ÷ 100?"

    Solid looks like: 16.15, 25, 0.042 — and they can say why 2.5 × 10 isn't 2.50.

    Dividing by two-digit numbers

    Can do: Divides four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors using a written method they can explain.

    Why it matters

    It's the hardest routine procedure in elementary maths, and it demands estimation, multiplication and subtraction working together.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Guesses the quotient digit wildly, loses track of place value, or misaligns the columns.

    Solid looks like: 217, with the working legible and place value maintained.

    Volume of solid figures

    Can do: Finds the volume of a rectangular prism by counting cubes and by multiplying length × width × height.

    Why it matters

    It's the first three-dimensional measurement and it makes cubic units — and cubed notation — concrete.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Uses area formulas on 3-D shapes, or gives the answer in square units.

    Solid looks like: 24 cubic units, with cubic said explicitly.

    The coordinate plane

    Can do: Plots and reads ordered pairs in the first quadrant and graphs a simple relationship.

    Why it matters

    It's the entry point to all of algebra and to every graph they'll read in science. The x-then-y convention has to be automatic.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Plots (3,5) at (5,3) — a coin-flip error rather than a misunderstanding.

    Solid looks like: Two different points, correctly placed.

    Order of operations and writing expressions

    Can do: Evaluates expressions with brackets and multiple operations, and writes an expression from a word description.

    Why it matters

    It's the grammar of algebra. Getting it wrong makes every later equation unreliable in a way that's hard to diagnose.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Works strictly left to right, so 2 + 3 × 4 becomes 20.

    Solid looks like: 14, 20, and 2 × (n + 5) with the brackets in the right place.

    Matter, mixtures and chemical change

    Can do: Distinguishes physical from chemical change, and knows matter is conserved even when it looks like it's gone.

    Why it matters

    Conservation of matter is one of the most counter-intuitive ideas in science and one of the most testable at home.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Thinks dissolved sugar has disappeared, and that gas has no mass at all.

    "If you dissolve sugar in water, does the water get heavier? How do you know?"

    Solid looks like: Yes, because the sugar is still there — and they can propose weighing it.

    Ecosystems, food webs and energy flow

    Can do: Traces energy from the sun through a food web and predicts the effect of removing one species.

    Why it matters

    It's systems thinking — the understanding that changing one thing changes several others, which transfers far beyond biology.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Thinks of food chains as straight lines with no consequences, and can't reason about knock-on effects.

    Solid looks like: A two-step chain of consequences, not just the first one.

    Earth's systems and the water cycle

    Can do: Explains how the water cycle moves water between spheres, and where fresh water actually is.

    Why it matters

    It links physical processes to a real resource problem, and the numbers involved are genuinely surprising.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Recites evaporation-condensation-precipitation as a memorised loop without understanding what drives it.

    Solid looks like: Heat from the sun, and some awareness that drinkable water is a tiny fraction.

    Causes and consequences in history

    Can do: Explains an event with multiple causes and distinguishes short-term triggers from long-term causes.

    Why it matters

    Single-cause history is the version that gets remembered and misused. Multi-causal thinking is the actual historical skill.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Gives one cause and treats it as the whole explanation.

    Solid looks like: Three genuine causes and a ranked judgement.

    Whose story is being told?

    Can do: Identifies whose perspective a historical account represents and whose is missing.

    Why it matters

    It's the difference between learning history and understanding it, and it directly builds the media literacy they need now.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Treats a textbook account as the neutral truth, with no sense that someone chose what to include.

    About any account: "Who wrote this? Who's not in it?"

    Solid looks like: Names a missing group or viewpoint, unprompted.

    Studying that actually works

    Can do: Uses self-testing and spaced practice instead of rereading.

    Why it matters

    Rereading feels effective and isn't. Retrieval practice is the best-supported finding in learning science, and almost no child does it by default.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    "Revising" means reading the notes again and feeling familiar with them, which is not the same as knowing them.

    Solid looks like: Any answer involving testing themselves, covering the page, or writing from memory.

    Judging what's true online

    Can do: Checks who published something, when, and whether another source agrees, before believing it.

    Why it matters

    By eleven most children research online unsupervised. Source-checking is a habit, and habits are built by doing it out loud together.

    What it looks like when it's wobbly

    Believes the first result, judges credibility by how professional a site looks, and can't tell an advert from an article.

    Show any website. "Who made this? How do you know if it's true? Are they selling something?"

    Solid looks like: Checks the source and looks for a second one.

When to ask for help instead of practising harder

Home practice fixes most gaps. These are the ones where a conversation with the teacher — or an assessment — is worth more than another month of trying. Raising them early is not an overreaction; waiting a year rarely helps.

  • Still cannot add fractions with unlike denominators by June, after direct teaching.
  • Long division by two digits is inaccessible even with a multiples list.
  • Reads fluently but cannot say what an argumentative text was arguing.
  • Writing has no structure beyond a list of facts, with no thesis or evidence.
  • Persistent disorganisation — lost work, missed deadlines — beyond what one year's practice shifts. Raise it early; it responds well to explicit support.

By the end of 5th Grade
