Some things are clearly right (helping someone who fell). Some are clearly wrong (stealing). But many situations are in between. Ethical thinking helps you navigate the gray areas.
Fair doesn't always mean EQUAL. Giving a tall person and a short person the same size box to stand on isn't fair โ the tall person doesn't need it! Fair means everyone gets what they NEED.
Honesty is important because trust depends on it. But what about white lies? ('Your drawing is amazing!' when it's not.) When, if ever, is it okay to not tell the whole truth?
Why should we help others? Because it makes the world better. Because someone helped US once. Because it feels good. Because it's the right thing to do. What's YOUR reason?
Rules seem annoying sometimes. But what if there were NO rules? No traffic lights, no taking turns, no fair play. Rules exist to keep everyone safe and treat everyone fairly.
Almost every culture has a version of 'Treat others as you want to be treated.' Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and secular ethics all agree on this. Why is it so universal?
You find $20 on the playground. Nobody saw you find it. Do you keep it? Try to find the owner? Turn it in to lost-and-found? Each choice is defensible โ but which do YOU choose, and why?
It takes courage to do the right thing when it's unpopular. Standing up against bullying, admitting a mistake, or refusing to cheat requires bravery. Ethical thinking + courage = integrity.
When you make a mistake, own it. Don't blame others, don't make excuses. 'I did it, I'm sorry, here's how I'll fix it.' Taking responsibility earns MORE respect than being perfect.
Even kids can make the world better! Clean up your neighborhood. Help a younger kid. Stand up to bullying. Vote (when you're old enough). Small actions, big impact.
Taking someone's toy without asking. Copying someone's homework. Downloading music without paying. Where is the line? Ethical thinking helps you navigate property rights.
When should you keep a secret? When should you tell? Rule: If the secret puts someone in DANGER, tell a trusted adult. Otherwise, respect people's privacy.
Do we have a duty to protect the environment? For future generations? For animals? For the planet itself? Environmental ethics is one of the most important topics of our time.
If nobody catches you, is cheating okay? Ethical thinking says no โ because cheating harms fairness, trust, and your own learning. The person you cheat the most is yourself.
Being polite means saying 'please' and 'thank you.' Being KIND means genuinely caring about others' well-being. Politeness is the minimum. Kindness is the goal.
You find someone's phone on a bench. It's unlocked. You could: A) Look through their photos. B) Call their 'Mom' contact. C) Turn it in to nearby staff. D) Keep it. What do you do? Why?
Should we eat animals? Should animals be in zoos? Should we test medicines on animals? These questions don't have easy answers, but thinking carefully about them makes you more ethically aware.
Is it okay to share someone's photo without permission? Is online bullying less serious than in-person? Your digital actions have real consequences for real people.
Someone stole food because they were hungry. Should they be punished (justice) or forgiven (mercy)? Most real-world situations require BOTH โ punishment proportional to the crime, with understanding of the circumstances.
Write your own code of ethics โ 5-10 rules you'll live by. Examples: Always tell the truth. Stand up for others. Take responsibility. Be kind even when it's hard. This becomes YOUR moral compass.
