Terence Tao
b. 1975Early
Sat university maths classes at nine. Took an IMO bronze at ten, a silver at eleven and gold at thirteen — the youngest gold medallist there has been.
Later
PhD at twenty-one, Fields Medal in 2006, and a research blog he has kept for the best part of two decades. Most of his papers have a co-author on them.
Our reading: He never stopped being a student, and he works with people. The lone genius is a story; the collaborator is the career.
