Atomic structure and periodic trends

Why it matters
The table is a predictive tool, not a lookup list. Understanding why the trends exist replaces a great deal of memorisation.
What it looks like when it's wobbly
Treats the table as a reference chart and memorises trends without any underlying reason.

Predict Before You Look
- 1Cover the data and predict which of two elements is more reactive, larger, or a better conductor.
- 2Write the reasoning before checking.
- 3Check against real data and mark where the reasoning failed, not just the answer.
- 4Draw electron arrangements for the first twenty elements and connect them to group behaviour.
