Day 47 of 180Week 10 of 36, TuesdaySecond quarter

Detail or main idea?

๐Ÿ“– Reading๐Ÿ” Practiseโฑ๏ธ about 25 minutes

Read a page, then say five things from it. Sort each into "this is the main idea" or "this is just a detail". Only one should land in the first pile.

Reps on something already met. Short, and worth doing even on a bad evening.

Today is rung 3 of 9 on this topic

Finding the main idea in non-fiction

Can do: Reads an informational page and states the main idea in one sentence, with two supporting details.

Why it matters

From Grade 3 onward most school reading is non-fiction, and it is read to extract something. Detail-collecting without a main idea is reading that produces nothing.

What it looks like when it's wobbly

Gives the most interesting fact instead of the main idea, or retells the whole page instead of summarising it.

โฑ๏ธ Two-minute check

Read one page of a non-fiction book. "What was that page mainly about โ€” in one sentence?"

Solid looks like: A sentence covering the whole page, not the single most exciting fact in it.

One Sentence Summary

A non-fiction book, magazine or article
  1. 1Before reading, look at the heading and pictures and predict what it will be about.
  2. 2Read the page. Then close it โ€” summarising with the page open turns into copying.
  3. 3"Tell me what it was about in one sentence. Ten words or fewer."
  4. 4Open it again and find two details that support that sentence.
  5. 5Compare their sentence to the heading. Headings are usually the main idea in disguise.

If it's too hard

One paragraph rather than a page.

If it's too easy

Summarise a whole chapter in three sentences, one per section.

Say this

"That's a detail, not the main idea. What was the *whole page* about?"
