Can do: Mixes short and long sentences, uses conjunctions and commas correctly, and avoids run-ons.
Why it matters
Rhythm is what makes writing readable, and by Grade 4 mechanics are directly marked. Both improve fastest by reading work aloud.
What it looks like when it's wobbly
Every sentence is the same length and starts the same way, joined by an endless chain of "and".

Take their last piece and count the words in each sentence.
Solid looks like: A real spread โ some under eight words, some over fifteen โ and varied openers.

Sentence Surgery
- 1Number the words in each sentence in the margin.
- 2Find two long sentences and split one. Find two short ones and join them with a conjunction.
- 3Underline the first three words of each sentence and change any repeats.
- 4Add one deliberately very short sentence for effect. Like this.
- 5Read the before and after aloud and ask which sounds better.
If it's too hard
Just split the longest sentence into two.
If it's too easy
Start a sentence with a subordinate clause: "Although it was raining, โฆ"
Say this
"Read it out loud. Did every sentence sound the same? Break one up."
