Ratios are a way to compare two or more quantities. A ratio shows how much of one thing there is compared to another. For example, if there are 2 apples and 3 oranges, the ratio of apples to oranges is 2:3. This means for every 2 apples, there are 3 oranges. Ratios can also be written as fractions. In our example, the ratio of apples to oranges can be expressed as 2/3. Ratios are useful in everyday life, such as when mixing ingredients in a recipe. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of sugar to 2 cups of flour, the ratio of sugar to flour is 1:2. Understanding ratios helps us make better decisions, like figuring out how much of each ingredient we need based on the number of servings we want to prepare.
