Proportions show how two quantities relate to each other. When two ratios are equivalent, they form a proportion. For example, if you have 2 apples for every 3 oranges, you can write this as the ratio 2:3. If you have 4 apples, you can find out how many oranges you would need to keep the same ratio. By setting up a proportion, you can write it as 2/3 = 4/x, where x represents the number of oranges. To solve for x, you can cross-multiply: 2 * x = 3 * 4. This simplifies to 2x = 12, and when you divide both sides by 2, you find x = 6. This means you need 6 oranges to maintain the same ratio of apples to oranges. Proportions are useful in everyday situations, like cooking or mixing drinks, where you want to keep the same flavor balance.
