Surface area is the total area of the outside of a three-dimensional shape. To find the surface area, you add up the areas of all the faces that make up the shape. For example, letโ€™s consider a rectangular prism, like a shoebox. This prism has six faces: two on the top and bottom, two on the sides, and two on the front and back. If the dimensions of the shoebox are 2 meters long, 1 meter wide, and 1 meter high, you find the area of each face. The top and bottom each have an area of 2 meters x 1 meter = 2 square meters, and the sides each have an area of 1 meter x 1 meter = 1 square meter. By calculating and adding these areas together, you find the total surface area is 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 10 square meters. Understanding surface area helps us in real life, like when wrapping gifts or painting walls.
