Animal cells are the basic building blocks of all animals. They are much smaller than the cells of plants and bacteria, but they have some important features. Each animal cell is surrounded by a flexible outer membrane that controls what enters and exits the cell. Inside, there are various parts called organelles, which perform specific functions. For example, the nucleus acts like a control center, holding the cell's DNA and directing its activities. Another important organelle is the mitochondria, which produce energy for the cell. This energy fuels everything the cell does, from moving to growing. A concrete example of an animal cell is a red blood cell, which carries oxygen throughout the body. Understanding animal cells helps us learn how our bodies function and stay healthy.
