We had to do a history project about our family. I had to interview my grandparents. I was nervous. I had never asked them about the past. I made a list of questions. I called my grandmother. She told me about her childhood. She had grown up in another country. She had come to this country when she was young. She had faced many challenges. She had worked hard. She had built a life. I was determined to write a good report. I recorded our conversation. I took notes. I learned to appreciate her story. My grandfather had a tradition of telling jokes. But he also told me about the war. He had been brave. His experiences had influenced our whole family. I felt a responsibility to get the facts right. I wrote my report. I included photos. My teacher said it was excellent. I had discovered that history is not just in books. It is in our families. The project had taught me to listen. I would never forget what I had learned.
