Energy flow in ecosystems describes how energy moves through living things and their environment. It starts with producers, like plants, that capture sunlight to make their own food through photosynthesis. When animals eat these plants, they gain energy, which is then transferred to higher levels in the food chainโ€”first to herbivores and then to carnivores. For example, a grasshopper eats grass, and then a bird eats the grasshopper. At each step, some energy is lost as heat, but a portion continues to the next organism. This flow of energy is essential for sustaining all life forms in an ecosystem. Without it, plants couldn't grow, animals wouldn't have food, and ecosystems would collapse. Understanding this flow helps us see how interconnected all living things are.
