Natural selection is a process that explains how species evolve over time. It occurs when certain traits help organisms survive and reproduce better in their environment. For example, imagine a group of rabbits living in a snowy area. The rabbits with white fur are less visible to predators than those with brown fur. As a result, more white rabbits survive and have babies. Over generations, the population of rabbits will mostly have white fur. This change happens because the rabbits with the best traits are more likely to pass their genes to the next generation. Natural selection is often summarized as "survival of the fittest," where 'fittest' refers to those best adapted to their surroundings, not necessarily the strongest. This powerful process helps create the diversity of life we see today.
