Chemical reactions occur when substances, called reactants, interact to form new substances known as products. During a chemical reaction, bonds between atoms break and new bonds form, changing the arrangement of atoms. A common example is the reaction between vinegar and baking soda. When these two substances mix, they create carbon dioxide gas, which forms bubbles and causes fizzing. This reaction is not only fun to watch but also illustrates how chemical changes happen. The original substances lose their properties and create something new. Every time a chemical reaction occurs, energy is either released or absorbed, which can cause changes in temperature. Understanding chemical reactions helps explain many everyday processes, from cooking to rusting metals.
