Genetics heredity explains how traits are passed from parents to their offspring through genes. Genes, which are segments of DNA, carry the instructions for making proteins that determine traits like eye color, height, and even certain behaviors. Each person inherits two copies of each gene, one from each parent. For example, if one parent has brown eyes (dominant trait) and the other has blue eyes (recessive trait), their child is likely to have brown eyes because the brown eye gene can overpower the blue eye gene. This mixing of genes during reproduction leads to genetic variation, which is why siblings can look different from each other. Understanding heredity helps scientists study genetic disorders and can even guide breeding programs in agriculture to improve crops or livestock.
