DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for all living organisms. It is structured like a twisted ladder, known as a double helix, made up of four building blocks called nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of a sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. The order of these bases determines the information encoded in the DNA. Genes are specific segments of DNA that provide the instructions for making proteins, which perform most of the functions in our bodies. For example, the gene that determines eye color is made up of a specific sequence of nucleotides. When cells use the information in genes, they produce proteins that influence traits, like hair color or height. Thus, DNA and genes play crucial roles in inheritance and the diversity of life.
