The First Continental Congress convened in 1774 in response to the growing tensions between the American colonies and Britain. Delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies gathered in Philadelphia to discuss their grievances and formulate a unified response to British policies. This congress was significant because it marked the first collective action taken by the colonies as a unified body.
