Leaders Compared: Lenin, Robespierre and Washington

Comparing revolutionary leaders shows how personality, ideology and institutions interacted. Washington was a military leader who deferred to civilian bodies and left power voluntarily. Robespierre was a lawyer and orator who believed in virtue and popular sovereignty, gained dominant influence through the Committee of Public Safety, and was overthrown by colleagues who feared him. Lenin was a professional revolutionary who built a disciplined party, shaped its strategy and ruled through it, establishing a one-party state that outlasted him.

Napoleon and Bolívar offer further comparisons as military leaders who concentrated power. Historians caution against 'great man' history, since all of these leaders depended on wider forces. Still, choices mattered: Washington's resignations, Robespierre's rhetoric of purification and Lenin's decision to dissolve the Constituent Assembly each shaped the institutions that followed.
