The Battle of Yorktown, fought in October 1781, effectively marked the end of major combat operations in the American Revolutionary War. This decisive battle saw American and French forces, led by Washington and French General Rochambeau, lay siege to British General Cornwallis's troops. The successful siege, coupled with the French naval blockade, trapped Cornwallis and forced his surrender on October 19, 1781. The victory at Yorktown not only secured American independence but also demonstrated the effectiveness of alliance-based military strategy in achieving revolutionary goals.
